Medium or Psychic: What Is the Difference, and Which Should You Consult?

“I'm looking for a medium… or a psychic, I'm not quite sure.” This sentence comes up almost every week in the messages we receive. The two words are everywhere, often used interchangeably, and people end up booking a reading without really knowing what they came for.
This confusion is not trivial: it is the leading cause of disappointment after a reading. Someone who hoped for contact with their late father and receives an energy reading about their professional life will leave frustrated, even though the reading may well have been accurate. Taking five minutes to understand the distinction completely changes the quality of what you will experience.
Two words, two different kinds of perception
The difference does not lie in the level of ability, nor in how serious the practitioner is. It lies in the source of the information and the channel through which it arrives.
The psychic perceives information
Clairvoyance is the reading of a field: your energy, your ongoing dynamics, the directions taking shape. The psychic picks up images, sensations, atmospheres. They describe what is present within you and around you, sometimes what is beginning to move. The medium of the reading may be a tool — cards, an oracle — or direct perception.
The medium receives a communication
Mediumship, on the other hand, implies someone on the other side. The medium serves as a bridge: they receive what comes from the beyond, from a loved one who has passed, from a guide, from a presence. It is no longer a reading; it is an exchange. The medium does not look for information in your field: they relay what is conveyed to them, in their own words, images, and sometimes physical sensations.
In other words: the psychic looks, the medium listens. One describes a landscape, the other carries a voice.
Why the two terms get mixed up so often
Because in practice, both faculties often coexist in the same person. Many mediums also perceive energies; many psychics occasionally receive messages. The term “psychic medium” is therefore not a marketing stretch: it genuinely describes this dual sensitivity.
What is problematic, however, is the vague use of vocabulary to artificially broaden a promise. A trustworthy practitioner will tell you spontaneously what they do — and what they do not do.
What neither of them does
This may be the most important point of this article. Neither clairvoyance nor mediumship delivers a guarantee. No one can announce a date of return, a certain outcome, or a decision someone else will make in your place.
An honest reading sheds light, puts things in perspective, soothes, and helps you decide. It never replaces your free will, nor medical, legal or financial advice. Anyone who promises you a result, or who talks about a block to be “lifted” for an extra fee, has stepped outside the bounds of seriousness — and that subject deserves an article of its own.
How to know what you need
You are looking for a medium if…
You have lost a loved one and the absence remains an open wound. You want to know whether they are at peace, whether they heard you, whether something was left unsaid. You carry an old grief that never healed. You sense a presence at home, in a place, in recurring dreams.
You are looking for a psychic if…
You are at a crossroads: a relationship that wavers, a career decision, a move, a project that is not moving forward. You do not want to speak with someone who has passed; you want to see clearly in your own situation and understand the forces at play.
And if you don't know?
That is the most common case, and it is not a problem. You do not have to decide before the reading: simply come with your real question, even if it is clumsily phrased. The reading adapts to what comes through.
Which format to choose for a first reading
We offer two ways in, depending on what you are looking for.
Written Guidance suits those who prefer a precise question and a considered answer they can reread. You formulate your request and receive a structured response. No appointment to keep, no emotions to manage live: it is often the gentlest way in for a first time.
The private reading allows a living exchange. It is the format to favor for mediumship: dialogue leaves room for clarifications, confirmations, and the silences that matter.
Remote accompaniment, by choice
All readings take place remotely, by WhatsApp video or by phone. This is not an organizational constraint; it is a choice of quality: you stay at home, in your own surroundings, with no commute, no waiting room, no need to put on a social face just before or just after. Emotion can flow freely, and it flows better that way.
Nicolas-David Paris® also receives clients in his private office in Andorra, by invitation. There are no in-person readings in France.
As for the accuracy of remote readings, physical distance changes nothing: the connection does not pass through the room, it passes through attention. Our testimonials say more than any explanation could.
Choosing the person, not just the discipline
Once the distinction is clear, the essential question remains: to whom are you entrusting an intimate moment? Look at the clarity of the prices, the absence of promises, the way you are answered before you have paid anything at all. Look at whether you are told no when it is necessary.
Nicolas-David Paris® was named Best Medium in France 2020* and then Best Medium in Paris 2022*. These distinctions guarantee nothing on their own — they simply show that a practice has been carried out for years in full public view.
Before booking
The calendar is announced as fully booked until December 2026. A limited number of priority access slots are released, and Written Guidance requests remain the simplest way to get an answer without waiting for a slot to open.
You will find details of the formats, lead times and how readings unfold in our FAQ. And if your situation resembles none of these cases, write to us: we will tell you honestly whether we are the right people.
In one sentence
The psychic lights your path; the medium connects you to those who have left it. Knowing which one you are calling is already the beginning of the reading.
* According to the national medium rankings 2020-2022.
Readings do not replace any medical, legal or financial advice and carry no promise of results.
